Blue moon – dogs, students and dancing this week

The summer’s fun continues to run.

We have a busy week here at Mity Nice, and we’re really looking forward to seeing friends back from vacation and students and staff back to U-M and other local universities. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s up with us:

  • Thursday, Aug. 30 –  We’re heading to Main Street around 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. to welcome Lena and Habana, the Latin American restaurant, to our neighborhood.  If you want a shot of tequila in your Italian ice, start at the cart then step inside!
  • Friday, Aug. 31 – Our first Full Moon, Dogs & Spoon event. Please stop by on Main Street with your friendly dogs, big, small, young or old. We are big dog lovers, and so we’ll have dog treats (courtesy of Dogma Catmantoo in Kerrytown) and a dog game or two. The spoon, of course, refers our wooden spoon so owners and friends can savor late summer heat with a couple of scoops of lemon or lime Italian ice.
  • Saturday, Sept. 1 – Hello Students! Look for us on our North University sidewalk space near Hill Auditorium, starting around 4 p.m. We’ll crack out the Go Blue! Italian ice, and give away a dozen of our Maize & Blueberry muffins to students, then scoop up some sweetness to new and old friends.
  • Sunday, Sept. 2 – Dancing in the Streets. Such a joyful event, with free dance lessons and music and more along Main Street. We have been part of it every year, and we always donate a percent of our sales to the organizers, the Ann Arbor Community of Traditional Dance and Music.  We’ll be there by around 1, and the dancing begins at 2 p.m. with ballroom dance lessons and family dance too.  (Yes, we will dance a bit, when we’re not scooping or pouring drinks.)

We hope to see you at a few of these fun events – dancing shoes and dogs are optional, but joy and friendship and Italian ice are essential!

More fun with farmers, fairies, dancing and dogs

Every month, on the Second Sunday, we organize and hold a special event at the Sunday Artisan Market, part of our effort to bring more people to see the beauty and savor Kerrytown (and our Italian ice.)

This weekend is our Fairies & Fairy Door Festival, and it is jammed with joyful activities. We hope you have your fairy wings or pirate costume prepared.

Yet Mity Nice lives up to its name, sweetly, with some other fun days and nights planned too. We are celebrating the farmers and other vendors at the Farmers Market and appreciating the return of U-M and other students to Ann Arbor.  And we’re trying a new evening to bring together dogs and dog owners and give them a place to gather together and savor the season.

Here’s a look at some of the joy that gives credence to our slogan “joy and jobs through Italian ice – that’s Mity Nice!”

Weds., Aug. 15 –  Free Farmers Market vendor ice day . Vendors will receive a special coupon, good for one day only, so they can feel our appreciation for how hard they work, and how much they liven up Kerrytown.

Friday, Aug. 17 – Mity Nice Dogs Night Out.  Bring your well-behaved dog down to Main Street for a treat and a chance to sniff and smile at other pooches.  The official event is  7-9 p.m. but we’re dog-friendly all the time. (Our mascot is Dannie, our big brown dog, and she’s likely to come out for the evening.)

Sept. 1 – Hello students night! We’re Mity Nice…. We will set up on our North University space, right near Hill Auditorium, and we’ll hand out some free Maize & Blueberry muffins (limited quantity) and coupons and such. This event also will kick off our fundraising drive, throughout September, to reduce the number of hungry in our community. The funds will go to Food Gatherers, the Breakfast at St. Andrews and a third local anti-hunger charity still to be chosen.

Sept. 5 – Friends & Family Free Ice Frenzy.  You can enjoy as much free Italian ice as you like during this annual event, provided you are friendly with us on Facebook.  Details on the location and hours will be given on our Facebook page!

Besides these activities we’re creating, we also like to join the fun when city codes allow it or when groups invite us in.  So we’ll set up on our Detroit Street spot for Nash Bash, featuring musicians from Nashville, on Aug. 16, and we expect to be on Main Street during Dancing in the Streets, a very fun event on Labor Day that we’ve supported for a few years.

Please share these events with your friends, and stop by and say hello. We have some of the nicest customers and we’re so glad to see you, regardless of whether you’re buying a pint of Italian ice or just bringing Bowser by for a visit.

Dads & Dogs – a sweet sweet day!

Sunday was such a special day – our second Second Sunday and a chance to really connect with the community. We spent much of the day with the amazing volunteers from Last Day Dog Rescue , Eleanor and her wonderful children’s art projects and met some the new friends we made near the Mity Nice cart, too.

Our new page highlights our friends and sponsors, including some local businesses that help make us look good.

Meanwhile, enjoy a few photos from our Dads & Dogs:

Dogs, sweet dogs and more dog fun

When I see a dog named Sugar Momma coming to Mity Nice’s Second Sunday this weekend, I can’t help but feel good about life and the events we are creating (with much assistance from many wonderful people).

Our Second Sunday events are part of our efforts to be engaged and generous, and support causes we care about. So every month, we dream up something fun to bring more people into the amazing Ann Arbor Sunday Artisan Market. They are our partner on these events, and also we hope a recipient of some of the good karma and good customers that come to Kerrytown to enjoy the day’s activities.

Then, just to live up to our name, we try to add a second charity partner, one that fits the theme of the month’s event. So for May’s Making It & Moms, the Girl Scouts came in, sold cookies and talked about their summer camps. For Dads & Dogs, we’re bringing in the Last Day Dog Rescue group.

Sugar Momma is almost 6 and loves children (Photo courtesy of Last Day Dog Rescue)

This is an all-volunteer group, where dogs stay in foster parents’ homes around the region. For the pet adoption event Sunday, one foster mom has signed up Sugar Momma, a sweet American bulldog and boxer mix. This cute, friendly pooch lives in Chelsea with our friend, April, (who we met when we adopted our dog Dannie Girl from the organization more than a year ago).

“She’s way sweeter than her name,” April says of Sugar Momma, and she will be great in a home with children. She’s also more interested in people than other pets. Sugar Momma is currently being treated for heartworm, so even if you cannot take her home, you could contribute to her care.

Last Day foster families are caring for close to 180 dogs and cats, and  April always has two or three or extra dogs staying with her.

We especially like Last Day Dog Rescue because its overhead is very low – they’re all volunteer and do not have a building to maintain- and because they save dogs that other shelters are about to destroy.  So we are donating 20 percent of our Dads & Dogs Italian ice sales to the organization.

Those who bring their own dogs to the Artisan Market will have fun too.

We’re thrilled to have some fun dog puzzles for pooches to play before, during or after the event. They come from Dogma Catmantoo,  just down Fourth from us. (Coming soon – a page of appreciation for the businesses and other sponsors that collaborate with us!)

We will have plenty of water bowls for your pooches and some treats along the artisans’ booths. The dog fashion show registration starts at 12:45 p.m. and the show begins at 1:30. (If your dog is not friendly or socialized enough to show up amid a bunch of dogs and kids and people, please bring a photo or submit it on our Facebook page!) And for those who can’t stand attire on a pet with a beautiful natural coat, it is a clothing optional fashion show!

Dads & Dogs – our next Second Sunday event

Dads, bring your kids and your pooch and come down for some pre-Father’s Day fun. You’ll get a free Itty Bitty Italian ice and your children can enjoy our dog-themed crafts. (You of course will need to buy them their own sweet treats from the Mity Nice cart.)

They can buy you something fabulous from someone in the Artisans Market.

If you don’t have a dog, the Last Day Dog Rescue will bring some for you. They and their 15 to 20 pooches looking for forever homes, and will be around 12 to 3 p.m.  (Note: Mity Nice’s owners adopted their sweet brown dog through Last Day and are very happy with her, and the group.)

Then everyone can come watch the Dog Fashion Show at 1:30 p.m.  Registration starts at 12:45 p.m. Well-behaved dogs dressed up or down or dressed in drag are welcome. (Dogs that are aggressive or not so socialized are welcome to show up via a photograph posted on our Facebook page or brought to the event.)

Prizes will be awarded – your dog could win something wonderful from Dogma Catmantoo, (just down the street from us) or from Found (a sweet vintage and gift gallery also in our neighborhood).

Dog owners without a dad or kids in tow are welcome too. So are enthusiastic dog lovers who just want to collect a few wet kisses or dispense some head scratches. (Sorry doggies, but our Italian ice is vegan. We know some of the artisans will have dog treats available for you, though.)
